When results come in, state by state
Times are Eastern Standard Time on November 3 (clocks go back on November 1). A state’s first numbers usually appear soon after its polls close, but how fast it finishes depends on its rules for mail ballots.
| Polls close (ET) | State | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00 p.m. | Georgia | Counties must post early-vote results by 8 p.m. or within an hour of their polls closing. Absentee ballots are due when polls close. If no one passes 50%, the top two meet in a runoff on December 1. |
| 7:00–8:00 p.m. | New Hampshire | Most towns close at 7, some at 8. Absentee ballots are processed at the polls during Election Day. |
| 7:00–8:00 p.m. | Florida | No results until 8 p.m. ET, when the Panhandle closes. Early and mail votes must be reported within 30 minutes, so most of the vote comes in fast. |
| 7:30 p.m. | Ohio | Absentee ballots must arrive by close of polls; absentee totals are uploaded first, around 8 p.m. Military and overseas ballots count until November 7. |
| 7:30 p.m. | North Carolina | Mail ballots must be received by 7:30 p.m. Military and overseas ballots count until 5 p.m. November 12; the state canvass is November 24. |
| 8:00 p.m. (El Paso 9:00) | Texas | Early-vote totals post first. Mail ballots postmarked by Election Day count if they arrive by 5 p.m. on November 4. |
| 8:00 p.m. (four UP counties 9:00) | Michigan | Larger communities can process absentee ballots before Election Day, but no totals come out until polls close. |
| 8:00 p.m. | Maine | Ballots must be received by 8 p.m. If no Senate candidate wins a majority, a ranked-choice count in Augusta can take a week or more. |
| 8:00 p.m. | Pennsylvania | Mail ballots can’t be opened before 7 a.m. on Election Day, so counting runs late into the night and beyond. |
| 8:00 p.m. (west 9:00) | Kansas | After an October court ruling, mail ballots postmarked by Election Day still count if they arrive within three days. |
| 9:00 p.m. | Iowa | Absentee ballots must be received by close of polls. |
| 9:00 p.m. | Minnesota | Absentee ballots can be run through machines in advance, but no totals until polls close. Mailed ballots must arrive by Election Day. |
| 9:00 p.m. | Nebraska | The whole state closes at once. Early ballots must be received by close of polls. The Senate race is Pete Ricketts (R) against independent Dan Osborn. |
| 9:00 p.m. | Arizona | First results about an hour after polls close. Early ballots dropped off on Election Day take days to count. |
| 9:00 p.m. | Wisconsin | No processing of absentee ballots before Election Day. Milwaukee’s absentee count often reports late at night. |
| 9:00 p.m. | New York | Early votes are in the election-night totals. Mail ballots postmarked by November 3 count if received by November 10. |
| 10:00 p.m. | Nevada | Ballots postmarked by Election Day count if received by November 7, and voters can fix signature problems until November 9, so close races take days. |
| 11:00 p.m. | California | Mail ballots postmarked by Election Day count if they arrive within seven days. Counting takes weeks; results are certified by December 11. |
| Midnight (Aleutians 1 a.m.) | Alaska | Election-night results show first choices only. Ranked-choice tabulation is on November 18 and certification is targeted for November 25. |
From state election offices and recent reporting, checked October 2026. Rules for late-arriving ballots stay in place after the Supreme Court’s June 2026 decision allowing states to count ballots postmarked by Election Day.
How to read the night
- Early numbers can mislead. In some states mail votes come first and lean one way; in others Election Day votes come first. A lead at 9 p.m. isn’t a result.
- Watch the slow states. If Senate control depends on Arizona, Nevada, Alaska, Maine or a Georgia runoff, the markets may not settle for days or weeks.
- Thin markets jump. Single House seats and small races can move on one large order. The chamber-control markets are the deepest.
- The AP doesn’t call a race until the last polls in that state have closed, and then only when trailing candidates have no path to victory.
