How California elects its governor
California uses a “top-two” primary: every candidate, of every party, runs on one ballot in June, and the two with the most votes advance to November regardless of party. That can produce a general election between two Democrats, or between a Democrat and a Republican. Democrats have held the governorship since 2011.

Reading a lopsided market
When a candidate trades above 90¢, the market sees the race as close to decided. At that level there’s little to gain from buying the favourite (a 96¢ share returns 4¢ on 96¢) and the price mostly reflects the small chance of an upset. Prices that high also move slowly unless real news breaks.
Election night: how this market settles
- Polymarket resolves once the Associated Press, Fox News and NBC have all called the race for the same candidate, or on the official certified result if they haven’t. If the result isn’t confirmed by July 31, 2027, it resolves to “Other”.
- Kalshi settles on who is elected governor in the 2026 election, and can settle early once a consensus of media organisations projects the winner.
California counts slowly by design. Mail ballots postmarked by election day count if they arrive within seven days, and counties routinely take weeks to finish. A lopsided race is usually called on the night; a close one may not be. Rules as published on each market, checked October 2026.
