How culture markets differ
Most culture markets are about one moment, like an awards ceremony, so they swing hard as the date gets closer: precursor awards, guild votes and critics’ prizes all move the price of an Oscar contender. They are also thinner than election or sports markets, so a single trader with a strong view can move a price a long way. Treat a price on a small market as one opinion with money behind it, not a consensus.
Awards markets also have a quirk: before the nominations are out, many films are priced on two questions at once, whether they’ll be nominated and whether they’ll win. Our guides explain how each venue handles that.
