Manifold Markets is a prediction market that runs on play money. Anyone can create a market on almost any question, and traders bet with “mana”, a virtual currency that can’t be turned into cash. That makes it a popular place to practise forecasting, test questions nobody else lists, and follow what a community of forecasters thinks, without risking real money. This profile covers how it works and how it compares with real-money markets, from Manifold’s own site and announcements, checked October 2026.
How Manifold works
- Mana. New users get Ṁ1,000 of play money. Mana can’t be converted to cash.
- User-created markets. Anyone can create a market and write its resolution criteria; the creator usually resolves it, under Manifold’s community guidelines.
- Prices. Like other prediction markets, each market’s price reads as a probability. Prices are set by an automated market maker rather than a matching order book.
The end of real-money sweepstakes
For a while Manifold also ran “sweepcash”, a sweepstakes currency that could be redeemed for cash. It ended that in 2025, saying sweepstakes hadn’t met its usage goals: users had until March 28, 2025 to cash out or donate, and leftover sweepcash was converted to mana. In 2026 Manifold introduced opt-in prize drawings paid in USDC for eligible users aged 18 or over, with a free way to enter.
Manifold vs real-money markets
| Manifold | Kalshi / Polymarket | |
|---|---|---|
| Money | Play money | Real money |
| Who creates markets | Any user | The exchange |
| Who resolves | Usually the market creator | The exchange or an oracle, under written rules |
| Regulation | Not a financial exchange | CFTC exchange (Kalshi, Polymarket US); offshore exchange (Polymarket main) |
| Best for | Practice, niche questions, community forecasts | Trading with real stakes and deep liquidity |
Because nothing real is at stake, Manifold prices can be noisier on thinly traded questions, but its range of questions is far wider than any regulated exchange’s.
Who runs Manifold?
Manifold was founded in December 2021 by Austin Chen and brothers James and Stephen Grugett.
